When Dapper Wedding Looks Hold An Archive

When Dapper Wedding Looks Hold An Archive

Though the archive Men’s Formal Wear appears like a lake without any waves, it, in fact, traps the mayhem of every contemporary social structure and its consequent wrinkles in the aspects of life. The seeds trace back to ancient Egypt when Men’s fashion usurped the purpose of mere clothing. When for the first time men’s Style encapsulated the sword of impact drawn out of its sheath of authority.

The purpose of clothing became a connotation of the social designations of a particular era. The avant-garde history of men’s wear travels through different eras of political as well as social upheavals. The men’s formal wedding wear of today is no less than an archive of social standings and bespoke clothing the epitome of it.

To taste the experience of bespoke suits and formal men’s wear step into the stores of OAR in Chennai.

TIME TRAVEL OF MEN’S CLOTHING

Modern formal wear owes its style statement to a complete range of political, social and economical epochs.

THE EMERGENCE OF MEN’S CLOTHING TO PERSONIFY POWER

Egyptian Pharaoh first catalyzed the new purpose of men’s clothing. The designations and differentiation in dress code symbolized the hierarchy chain and brought into men’s wear a completely new perspective. They marked the status, power and eligibility to particular strata of contemporary society. Aristocracy became synonymous with fashion setters for a particular era. Who wears what denoted Who is he. The first seeds of formal men’s wear.

PRE-REGENCY ERA - ANGLOMANIA

If we talk of formal suits, the drastic changes from the dandy or elaborate clothing of the royal clan to more sombre, pristine and comfortable clothing. Every generation brings in a rebellious attitude to break away from the father’s perspective.

The changing social standings of the Regency era heralded young men dashing towards every possible sport and interaction which led to the clear distinction between formal and informal wear. It was another ridge into the social structure grappling with the shift in the sense of power in England.

Tail coats were the find of this era. Elaborate coats were replaced with elegant, monochromatic colored ones. Codes of etiquettes merged with codes of dress.

Anglomania after the French revolution contributed largely to the notion of everything English being the scale of men’s wear.

George Brummell ignited the blast into what we today call formal wear, barging through the boundaries of all class distinctions. A man out of the gentry class who revolutionized the codes of elite wear, rigid representative styles and notions of elegance. Brummel is often termed as the father of Modern Men’s Wear. He preferred clean fashion rather than embellishments.

So, comfort without sacrificing formal good looks became a priority for the young ones of the 18th century. Shorter frock coats minus the adornments and brighter colours marked its changes in the formal men’s wear. The highest codes of dressing were adopted from military officers who became the new elites. Workers wore comfortable coats to facilitate easy riding so the frock coat became a simple cut coat.

American revolution and other ideological upheaval ushered in a political virtue to men’s formal wear. Rank was displayed in clothing like judges were known by their robes, workers by their safety vests etc.

20TH CENTURY

Rebellious youth gave way to youth who did not bother to listen to anyone. One thread that continued throughout this dynamic history was the criteria of good fabric. The twentieth century too chose good, softer fabrics and shorter vests. Opulent clothing replaced exquisite suits or coats or outfits of individual taste.

Jazz Clothing influenced by Jazz music aligned with the tight-fitting suits fashion. Jackets were long and tight waisted while the back had long vents.

The prime function was to enhance individual physical features. So tailoring based on individual choice, cutting, sewing men’s formal wear marked another signal for formal wear to be associated with the elite. Bespoke tailors and bespoke suits thus entered the realms of men’s formal wear. Savile Row franchised by the Earl of Burlington heralded the era of bespoke clothing. The birth of a Tuxedo or dinner jacket or party wear finds its origins on this street in Central London. Tuxedo and bespoke clothing and bespoke tailors proved that they were here to stay.

MARXIST BLEND

The notion of formal wear associated with aristocracy or the elite or the royal faded away with the advent of the Marxist ideological upheaval in Europe. The blurring lines between the bourgeoisie and labourers further merged the codes of men’s wear. American fashion entered the arena of men’s fashion and soon the trad style franchised by the Ivy league campus gave rise to clothing comfortable for driving motor cars. Later entered Wall Street fashion which was all about image. The representation of your personality.

Thus bespoke with its special taste of accentuating physique rather than social standing continued its flow throughout the political and social changes.

Bespoke, since then has stayed tagged to elegance, personal taste and individual physique.

THE DAPPER LOOK

The modern era in which we live has blended all these historical aspects of men’s wear and has innovated fabrics to comfort clothing in formal wear. Keeping up with the new tastes is not an easy feat for bespoke tailors. Yet, the purpose of bespoke tailoring is to bring out the individual vision of a man about himself into his formal wear. Bespoke suits speak out the attitude, taste and physique of a man without being put into words.

Weddings are occasions of formal excellence and emotional heights. Keeping up with the whole embellishments of the ceremony demands clothing that blends into the mood, yet stands apart in its outlook. Grooms have to balance the opulent festivities with the pristine of his personality, the tradition of the older generation with the vogue of his peers. That's the dapper look he needs.

A perfect blend of all these needs a sartorial edge to the wedding suits of the groom as well as the wedding wear of the men attending the ceremonies. The dapper look is not about perfect height, weight or colour, it's about a look that speaks just of the personal-you in your best element.

So, before the Shubh Muhurat gives you a slip, get yourself a makeover into the sartorial elegance of #dapperda.

Roots and Shoots of Savile Row - Join the Brief Journey

Roots and Shoots of Savile Row

The Breeze of Bespoke Elegance from London to Chennai

Savile Row has become synonymous with bespoke suits, bespoke tailoring, comfort etc. Where there is fish the birds will flock. This saying describes best, the emergence of Savile Street with its affluent residents and then the flocking birds – the providers of luxuries and comfort to these rich fish.

One of the comforts personalised for the wealthy were the bespoke men’s wear. Master Tailors insist that Bespoke represent suits cut and made by hand. However, Etymology says, the word originates to mean “to exclaim”.

If you think the Sartorial elegance of Bespoke men’s wear is a privilege only meant for the afforders at Savile Row, then you are wrong. It is no longer a monopoly of the Londoners, coz the Savile Row Academy has designed each of their wards of bespoke tailoring into masters of craftsmanship. And now we have one of them right here in Chennai. Curious?

Roots

Every city has its special nook and corner which represent a particular aspect of the city or particular trade or culture of a place.

Savile Row of London  was named after the wife of the 3rd Earl of Burlington, Lady Dorothy Savile. Earlier known as Savile Street because it was part of the Burlington estate development, in the early 18th century. Today the street represents Ultra Bespoke Tailoring.

When birds with the same feather flock together, it was natural for Savile street to grow into Savile Row lined with influential residents initially like William Pitt junior a politician along with many military officers. Celebrities from the world of artists like R B Sheridan the Irish descent playwright and Phileas Fogg with the protagonist of Around the World in 80 days fame.

Apart from these affluents, clubs like The Royal Geographical Society associated with the British ventures into the exploration of Asia, the South Pole etc. Also, the Savile Club or the Gentleman’s Club in 1968 stamped Savile Row with the seal of the most influential British affluents. Apple corps of the Beatles at 3 Savile Row opened the gates for artists like Mary Hopkin, Badfinger etc.

Where there are needs there are service providers. The need for exclusive comforts and luxuries of this elite of British society attracted the traders of commerce and comforts. Among these were the tailors who began creating exclusive men’s wear for the Savile affluents. These custom made suits and other men’s wear catering to individual comfort and taste, went on to be known as Bespoke men’s wear or Bespoke suits.

The credit for the emergence of the exclusive tuxedo alternatively known as dinner jacket is given to Henry Poole who set up his tailoring shop at 37 Savile Row. He followed the footsteps of his father who earlier worked(tailoring) at 4 Old Burlington Street. That's how tailoring made an entry into Savile street.

The roots of Savile Row bespoke suits have naturally grown shoots to spread out in many countries and cities. Chennai is privileged to have nurtured one of them. Shoots

Savile Row not only is located in Central London, Mayfair but today is the heart of high-end men’s wear, specifically for the ones who prefer the luxury of style and quality yet with discretion.

The style and traditional tailoring were taken to new heights with the establishment of the Nutters of Savile Row in 1969. The fame of bespoke tailoring continued till the 1900s and again received a breath of freshness with the ‘New Bespoke Movement’. The new movement was adorned with designers like Timothy Everest, Richard James etc.

With the increasing rentals and criticisms from new-age designers like Georgino Armani, the tailoring shops began declining. So, in 2004 the Savile Row Bespoke Association was founded to enhance and protect the heritage of bespoke tailoring. The members who assembled the association are Gieves & Hawkes, Dege & Skinner, Henry Poole and Anderson & Sheppard.

Savile Row Bespoke

Today it is the hub throbbing with bespoke brand stores like Ozwald Boateng, Yuri and Yuri, JP Hackett etc.

Savile Row Academy

Among all the shoots of bespoke tailoring of Savile Row, was also Maurice Sedwell’s Ultra Bespoke. But the need to train the future masters of bespoke suits, tuxedos, peacoats, Italian suits etc, there was a need to open the gates to the new generation and groom them to the highest attainable standards.

The Director of Maurice Sedwell, Andrew Ramroop founded the Savile Row Academy(SRA) with the objective “ …….. to protect, enhance and develop the value of bespoke tailoring by training aspiring tailors to the highest attainable standards.”

He joined the Ultra Bespoke tailors in the 1970s and was made to work in the backroom due to his race and colour. But, today with his persistence and consistency he is the Master Tailor of  SRA and believes that every aspiring youngster who wants to become a bespoke tailor should be given a chance and also see, that the standard of quality, elegance and style are never compromised.

As he says – “We inspire the young people who aspire to become tailors”.

At the 80th anniversary of Maurice Sedwell Tailors on 19th June 2018, he announced the Golden Thimble Award, which is a full scholarship to the certification courses at Savile Row Academy. The certificate course begins every year in September.

Savile Row Academy on 19 Savile row, an offshoot of  Ultra Bespoke Tailors may be in London but the students trained to finesse have created ripples across the globe upholding the ‘Pinnacle of Sartorial Elegance’ of Henry Poole and the great arbiter of taste 3rd Earl of Burlington also a fashion leader who catalysed the bespoke tailoring tradition.

Savile Row clothing involves Savile row suits, Italian suits, with dedicated craftsmanship of cutting and perfectly fitting formal men’s wear.

Fortunately for us, one of the shoots of SRA has grown right here in our elite gardens of Chennai, India. The Savile Row Academy certified Master Tailor Osman Adbul Razak has taken up the mantle to bring the breeze of Savile Row style and elegance into your lives.

Persistence and confidence in yourself are the only traits that can sail you through the choppy waters of change.

Trends in clothing also make a sheep out of you because everyone expects you to remain within the herd. So, when a man with iconic taste breaks away from the herd of normal professionals, isn't it bound to create ripples in the vicinity.?

Osman Abdul Razzak, thus with his crazy obsessions unfollowed the herd of fashionistas and discovered himself a style statement, worthy of his keen taste.

Trends flood the market and also fuzz out soon enough, only to be replaced by another. In the fast-paced world of today, nothing seems constant. The digital era has changed the perception of human lifestyle along with the mediums of these transformations.

Amongst all the transitions of the gadget-savvy generation, many things have gone obsolete. In the Indian context, thankfully, some stereotypes have lost their tenacious grips in gender-based discriminations and orthodox patriarchal conventions.

On the other hand, we Indians are a beautiful amalgamation of the old and the new, in every aspect of our lives. We have adopted digital streams as amenities yet not at the cost of our traditional heritage. We may groove to the tunes of Ed Shereen or Dua Lipa yet we have youth who are Bharatnatyam dancers or ghazal singers.

We may have launched satellites yet we live with our old parents. We may wear trousers and skirts yet we still revert to Sherwani and Saree for festivals or any family occasions.

It is a common saying that ‘old is gold’, same goes for styles and wine. You pay exorbitant amounts for Vintage wine, for its taste that grows delicious and heady with the lapse of time. People who churned such wine may have faded away with mortal lives, but their creations in taste still enthral you.

Creations in the fabric also have enthralled connoisseurs for centuries. The classical era is called so, for its power to withstand the test of time and generation gaps and retain the essence of quality with elegance in style. Because -

“Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered” -- Giorgio Amani

Weddings are often an affair of celebration in pomp with mixed emotions. Because, though the occasion is auspicious, planning the event is quite unnerving for everyone associated. The bride and the bridegroom being the stars of all the ritualistic functions usually, get unsettled more in selecting the right apparel for the D-days, than they are while finalizing their decision to marry each other. LOL

In the Indian context, women are considered the bearers of tradition, beauty, grace and the essential ‘Solah Shringaar’. But, the men, equally carry on the role of upholding the ambience of the ceremonies on their shoulders.

Selection of the best wedding dress appropriate for different occasions can dismay men as much as women.

Are you in a similar situation?

Weddings are for family and friends, so among the thousand and one things to plan and execute during a marriage, one is choosing dresses for the groom. The greatest humiliation while attending a function, even for men, is a Faux pas. Let’s help you prevent such mishaps.

For the ones who prefer sophistication in style over fashion in trend and seek the best bespoke tailor --

Your quest ends at the OAR store. In the words of Osman Abdul Razzak – “Let’s Define you!”

Epictetus the Greek philosopher, is labelled as a ‘stoic philosopher with a complicated life.’ His ahead-of-time philosophies had a great impact on people for many centuries to come. Among all his statements, one aptly defines the motto of OAR – “Know first who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly.”

Click Here to explore a space with the best groom wear ideas.

Sherwani – It is a traditional Indian men’s wear for grooms. It is a long outer coat with a front-buttoned-down. It's traced to Mughal dressing which is now blended with the western style.
